Experience in the Courtroom

Matt has worked extensively within Mississippi’s Circuit Court system throughout his legal career.
His experience spans both civil and criminal matters, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the cases and decisions that come before circuit courts.
Serving on the bench has provided firsthand experience in the careful judgment required to ensure the law is applied fairly.

Community, Faith, and Service

Beyond the courtroom, Matt Kitchens is deeply rooted in the community he serves. He and his children live in Crystal Springs. He is an active member of the Crystal Springs Methodist Church, and his faith guides his commitment to fairness, integrity, and service.

Matt has served as a volunteer counselor and organizer for Camp Rainbow, a summer camp for children with cancer, for over 20 years, and he is very involved with Camp Kamassa, Mississippi’s only fully handicap accessible camp for children and adults with special needs. Matt also serves as a board member of the Chautauqua Arts Foundation, which is actively involved in building an outdoor amphitheater facility at Chautauqua Park in Crystal Springs, creating new opportunities for community events and enrichment.

Continuing a Legacy of Service.

Matt Kitchens is inspired by a family legacy of public service. His paternal grandfather was a local businessman and the Mayor and City Judge of Crystal Springs. After he died, Matt’s grandmother, who retired from teaching piano at age 99, served in his stead until the next election.

Matt’s maternal grandfather was a Methodist minister who built churches across the country. His wife was also a piano teacher for many years. Matt’s father, Jim Kitchens, was elected three times as District Attorney and served 16 years on the Mississippi Supreme Court.

After retiring from a career as a public school teacher, Matt’s mother, Mary Kitchens, was instrumental in building Camp Kamassa, Mississippi’s only fully handicap accessible camp facility for children and adults with special needs, a project with which Matt has been very involved.

Upholding Fairness and Judicial Temperament

Serving as a judge requires careful judgment, patience, and respect for the law.

Matt approaches the bench with calm professionalism and the belief that every person who enters the courtroom deserves to be treated with dignity and fairness.

A judge’s role is not to advocate or perform, but to listen carefully, consider the facts, and apply the law faithfully.

This commitment to fairness guides every decision Matt makes on the bench.
